MORNING DEVOTIONS
Darkness and Light
God saw how good the light was. God separated the light from the darkness.
— Genesis 1:4 (CEB)
This separation represents the Creator’s first act of ordering — instilling purpose into creation.
Light is necessary for the remaining creative process. Vegetation needs light to grow; wildlife needs light to survive. Time is ordered by the cyclical alternation between darkness and light.
Darkness symbolizes disorder in our world — that which is not according to God’s purpose. Immediately following the creation narrative, Sin brought with it spiritual darkness that again covered the face of the earth, rendering humanity formless, empty, and, once again, in chaotic disorder with God’s purpose and plan.
Let us be grateful that God’s creative work continues today, redeeming and reordering our world and our lives in Jesus Christ.
Let me live in the light of our Lord.
