The kaki lima is among the most common sites at any public location and wandering through streets and neighborhoods selling whatever their specialty may be — sauteed meat, noodles, fruit, sweets. It’s a much older ancestor of the modern food truck.

One thing is sure — if it can be eaten, there is probably a kaki lima selling it!

Kaki lima is translated as “five legs,” referring to the three wheels of the cart plus the two legs of its owner. As in the picture above, a stationary kaki lima in a public place will often set out a few chairs where customers can enjoy their delicacy. A mobile kaki lima will also carry a small stool or two for the comfort of its customers.

In true ice-cream truck style, each kaki lima has its own unique call — a bell, a song, or a distinctive call from the one pushing the cart. People will come out of their homes, bringing their bowls or plate. And for passersby who may need a snack, a bowl and utensils are provided (and will be rinsed quickly in a bucket of water upon completion, ready for the next customer.

Having lived in several locations in Indonesia, we always had a handful of favorite kaki limas to go to regularly. It was nice to support local people working hard to provide for their families, and the food was delicious and cheap.
